  • My husband and sons love that show–maybe I ought to start watching it with them!

  • can you do Ax men next week for me?

  • *LOL* You’re definitely obsessed with it, uh?

  • It’s a blast Darla.
    And CowGal, for you ANYTHING.
Tempest, how many of these have you had to read? LOL.

  • Keep talking about it and eventually, I’m going to give in and watch it.

  • Never seen it. Now I’m just gonna have to aren’t I?

  • My heart is in my throat. I know these families make good money, but it makes you wonder why someone would choose to captain a boat. Oh, I so wish I could watch this series. I can understand your fascination with it Jen. Thanks for sharing.

  • INTERVIEW TIME BANDIT CAPTAINS:
    Jen,
Forgive me for posting here but I have had a tough time reaching you and want to invite you to interview the captains of the Time Bandit tonight at 8PM EDT – that’s 5 PM in your neck of the woods I think. I’d just hate for you to miss it because I couldn’t reach you.
    Here are the details:
    Here’s the official invitation:
I’m writing to invite you to a bloggers-only telephone news conference with two Deadliest Catch captains, to interview them about the program and their lives. As you know, it’s the personalities of these guys that make the show so compelling, and we want you to meet them.
On the phone with you will be brothers and co-captains of the ship Time Bandit, Johnathan and Andy Hillstrand. You may remember their dramatic rescue, last season, of a man who fell into the Bering Sea near where they were fishing.

    About our guests:
Captains Johnathan (king crab) and Andy Hillstrand (opilio crab) – Time Bandit
Brothers Johnathan and Andy Hillstrand share the skippering duties onboard their family-owned and operated vessel, the Time Bandit. Johnathan is the captain during king crab season. His love for living on the edge doesn’t end when he gets off the boat; He’s often seen wearing his distinctive leather jacket and cowboy boots and has a passion for riding his super-charged Harley. In the off-season, he splits his time between Seattle, Washington and Homer, Alaska.

Andy Hillstrand is the skipper during opilio crab season and spearheads the business side of the family’s fishing venture. During the off-season, Andy lives on a ranch in Indiana where he engages in his other passion — training horses.
A third brother, Deckhand Neal Hillstrand, has two of the most important duties on board the boat – cooking and keeping the boat running. Neal resides in Homer where he also owns and operates a hydroseeding company.

Designed by the Hillstrands’ father and custom built by the brothers, the Time Bandit features luxuries unheard of on other crab boats, including staterooms with queen-sized beds, a four-person sauna and a dishwasher.

  • So… what is The Deadliest Catch?

*running away with hands over head while tomatoes fill the air.*

  • How cool, Jen! And you get to interview them! See, your obsession is paying off! LOL!

Glad you stopped by for some b-day cake!
    Happy TT!

  • There’s lots of videos, Tara, if you just want a taste. YouTube has a bunch.
And Nina, my husband had a unique view of the whole thing since he was a drag fisherman for ten years. The most poignant moment came from the fact that Edgar is on that boat and his wife is at home. It’s so amazing that she can do it. I have a HUGE respect for the fisherman’s family.
WOW! Cynthia, thank you so much!
    And Alice, LOL!!!!!

  • LOL Kaige!!!! Pretty cool huh?

  • Does it mean I’m behind the times or just don’t visit your blog enough, Jen, since I don’t know what The Deadliest Catch is? :)

It’s obvious you love them though. lol

  • She LURVES them lol
I have to admit-it is riveting.
But Dirty Jobs is my testosterone-laden passion heehee

  • Well, Jenn, I’ve done at least three Deadliest Catch Thursday Thirteens AND wrote “Heart of the Storm” about Alaskan Crab Fishermen. But it’s just a LITTLE obsession. Really. Honest.
I absolutely ADORE Mike Rowe. That VOICE. Like Buttah.

  • Holy Crap!! You get to interview the Hillstrand brothers? I am so jealous. *seethes with envy*

  • Oh wait a minute, you did say the best captain was Phil. Never mind! *hand’s you a nice shot of whiskey* drink up sister!

  • It’s a great show, isn’t it? Did you know Hiram is from Astoria…the town where both Goonies and Kindergarten Cop were filmed. It’s beautiful up there. I’m not extra smart, I just clicked your link. Is he passed away? or just retired? I love your blog, lady. :D

  • Hey update on that invitation! I get to ask Jonathan and Andy some questions tonight!!!! Awesome huh?
Yo Lothian! Got any questions you want me to ask? I’ll find out from them the REALLY important question–Boxers or Briefs!!! LOL.
I think Hiram had a little run in with the Law. Ah those bad boys. I lurrrve them.

  • Color me a clueless New Zealander. :)
Have fun at your interview, Jen.

  • LOL Shelley! I hear The Deadliest Catch is going to be on NZ T.V. too. I’ll have to see if I can find out for you. I hate being ALONE in my obsession. LOL.

  • Okay, watching some of those videos actually made me seasick, LOL!

  • LOL Robin!!!! This from a woman who can do things in a combine I never even THOUGHT of!!!

  • If your post didn’t hook me, this comment trail sure did! I’ve GOT to look into this!

  • The commercial lobster fishery is big out here in Nova Scotia – and my husband and I lived in Yarmouth for two years, where fishing is where it’s at. Everyone aboard the vessels in your video clips could have walked off the wharves here and blended right in. That footage of the waves breaking over them as they worked was amazing, but the roll-over was scary. I’ve never seen the show but I really loved your T13 – thanks for all that footage. Rock and roll, baby!

  • Thanks Julia. I have to say I’m so glad the Redneck isn’t a commercial fisherman anymore.
But he’s a crane operator. Still an adrenaline junkie.

  • I’ve only seen it a few times, but enjoyed it then. You captured some great moments here!

    Happy TT!

  • crane operator?? Damn, that’s a job.

Good luck with your interview. I’ll tune in for the next week’s worth of blogging about it, lol.

  • So I have heard of the show but never watched it. Interesting that you are so hooked! :) I may have to give it a try but I can’t afford to get hooked to anything else right now!

My favorite is SNOW CRAB – sweeter and easier to get out than KING CRAB. :)

  • Ooh, those clips are awesome! That show is intense.

  • Great job with your post Jen! I can foresee a marathon of blogging this weekend, for me at least! Nice meeting you in the conference…

  • Update… give all the details of the interview! *drooling here*!

  • Kathleen, thank you.

And Cup, I’ve got a post all ready to go. I just need links to the actual recording.

Tricia, this is the first show I’ve ever really gotten hooked on. Lots of shows were “have to watch” every week, but I watch Deadliest Catch RERUNS and love them. I own the first season. Go figure.

Gina, I tried to pick the best.

Opilia, what a kick to be in the conference with you. It was really fun.

Nina, I’ll be posting a blog post on it soon. I totally didn’t go in as an author. I was such a fan girl. LOL. I don’t think I’ll ever get the hang of self promotion.

  • Edgar is *so* yummy. WH and I always watch TDC, and he’s like “this is such a great show-this is the best reality show ever- it’s so interesting, and exciting, and I really love the show, the way it’s edited and I wish I was tough enough to do what they do, you know?”

And I’m all like, “I’m sorry, what were you saying?” ~wipes drool off her chin~

  • OMG VBC, I do the same thing.
“What they’re using there is a *some weird named* winch and it blah blah blah…Honey, did you hear me?”
*tears eyes from big muscles back to the man I adore* “Whaaaa? Oh yes, a thingy mabob wench. I heard you.”

  • I don’t have cable, but I watched the first season on DVD and loved it. Now, see . . . you’re a bad influence on me. *re-arranges Netflix list*

  • I love this show! Gonna have to start watching it again! :-)

    Leslie

  • I love Sig and I would die if I had the chance to interview him.

  • I know Sig has done some interviews Paige. Sadly, none I’ve gotten to be involved in.
